The
electronics department in the local retail store is an exciting place to be.
The sound of technology ringing in your ears is enough to send even the most
composed consumer into an anxious ecstasy. That is until you are required to
make a decision on a major purchase. Then the nervous hesitation kicks in and
the mistake of an impulse buy is impending.
The
purchase of a flat screen television is not to be taken lightly. Users spend
hundreds and thousands of life hours parked in front of their television
screen. Whether it is for an individual or family entertainment, buying a
television that is not suited for the intended audience can be a costly
mistake.
Where do I
start?
The
first step to a knowledgeable purchase is to identify the primary use for your
television. A television you plan to use for gaming and watching movies may
need different features than a television being used for basic TV viewing.
Flatscreen televisions being used primarily for gaming purposes need to be able to
withstand long term use. Most gamers are serious gamers. They can find
themselves entranced in game systems and the pursuit of leveling up for hours
at a time. The television needs to be able to withstand many hours worth of
continuous us without losing steam.
Also,
the consumer may suffer visual fatigue making it necessary to have several
display adjustment options. A larger screen is smart to consider in the event
that larger view would be necessary. Those consumers that already suffer from
visual difficulties would need to make the size of the screen their top
concern.
If
your television will be used for gaming, watching movies, or online surfing,
you may want to consider looking for a television with the superior graphics.
Many games and HD movies are riddled with spectacular graphics. What a let down
if your television isn’t able to keep up with it. What’s worse than watching a
pixilated contortion of what should be the latest in visual accuracy and
detail?
Plasma vs. LED
vs. LCD. What’s the difference?
Televisions
are usually found in sizes ranging from 19 inches to a whopping 90 inches!
Plasma displays have a high contrast and work best in dimly lit rooms. Unless
you are planning to use your television regularly in a dark room or alley, it’s
probably best to skip this one.
LCD
is short for Liquid Crystal display and will work well in brightly lighted
areas. LCD’s don’t usually perform as well because the viewing angle is
diminished when you stand anywhere other than the front of the TV. This won’t
be much of an issue if you plan to sit directly in front of your TV screen, but
if you plan to sit back and watch movies on it, you won’t be able to move much.
LED
and LCD televisions are very similar. However, LED televisions provide a much
better contrast and consume less energy. Technology has progressed to also
providing the option of three dimensional (3D) graphics (which is great for
movies) should you choose to want that feature.
Try
to narrow down your choices based on the level of display quality you would
like. When you have two or three preferences, consider additional features and
price points to finalize your decision. With careful consideration and
knowledge you are sure to make an informed decision.
